Religious Titles: What About Them?
The terms ‘elder’, ‘overseer’ and ‘pastor’ all refer to the same office (Acts 20:17,28; Titus 1:5-8; 1 Peter 5:1-3). 2. ‘Evangelist’ and ‘preacher’ applies to men who preach the gospel message (2 Tim. 4:5). 3. Never is the word ‘reverend’ used in reference to a human being. In fact, it is only applied to God (Psalm 111:9 KJV). 4. Jesus condemned the use of religious titles which elevated Christians over other Christians (Matthew 23:8-10). To give a man or group of men the type of reverence that is due God, is an act of idolatry (Acts 10:25-35; Revelation 22:8-9).
