BRIEF HISTORY OF THE KNUST CHURCH OF CHRIST
Years of Small Beginnings
Dr. Steve Opoku Duah initiated the creation of a Campus Church in the mid-80s (1984-1985) at KNUST. By 1987, the church consisted of 14 members: 13 males and 1 female. The members were from diverse fields such as Agriculture, Biochemistry, Fine Arts, Architecture, and others.
Meetings and Meeting Places
Initially, the Campus Church held meetings in Room 15 Indece Hall, Main, and later moved to Room 6 Annex. The first convert was Duah’s roommate, Nixon Francis Akomeah, from SDA. Weekday meetings were for prayer, Bible study, and evangelistic activities on campus. On Sundays, Duah and Nexion worshipped at Asafo while the rest went to Bomso or other congregations of choice.
The vision of Founding Members
The primary motive for coming together was essentially for fellowship, to build one another in the faith, to hold one another accountable, and for evangelistic purposes.
Meeting Places
The Campus Church held meetings in various places such as Queen’s Hall Chapel, Unity Conference Room (later sacked), Basement (secured through Dr. Dadson), Publishing Studies Classroom, and Unity Hall Basement.
Development of Structures
The church began without any clearly defined leadership, informal activities, and no registration with University Chaplaincy. With time, the desire for a Campus Minister and a more scriptural leadership structure emerged. The church appointed Bro. Richard Gyan-Mante as the first Preacher on August 1, 2015.
