SUFFICIENCY OF THE BIBLE AND ALLEGED MODERN REVELATIONS
We live in a world where many of us desire to hear God speak to us. Some hold on to the idea that God literally speaks to one as a Christian if he/she wants to hear Him speak. They are of this view because they propound that the bible is not an enough guide for our salvation and therefore seek to hear God for further instructions. Is the Bible enough? (1 Corinthians 4:6) If yes, then where from these so called “revelations”? The problem is not their desire, but rather, the manner in which they want God to speak to them i.e. as they wish or in their preference, irrespective of God’s own terms/manner, and that is very dangerous.
Revelation is the act of making known of “something” which was formerly concealed or unknown. God revealed messages to his people through prophets, and God did that through visions and dreams (Numbers 12:6-8). He revealed messages to people like Adam, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Zacharias, Mary, Saul, John the apostle, and the likes. Paul, the apostle, wrote that Christ revealed mystery to the apostles and prophets, and on which he wrote to them (Ephesians 3:3-5). That is, the fact of revelation cannot be denied but the question is whether God is still revealing such mysteries to mankind or not. Does God still reveal things to us which pertains to life and godliness?
On that same night before His crucifixion, Christ told the apostles that the Holy Spirit will guide them into ALL truth (John 16:13). In John 14:26, the Holy Spirit had a task of teaching the apostles ALL things and bringing to their remembrance ALL things that Christ has said to them. The Holy Spirit truly led them into all truth and that was what Peter stated that “as His divine power has given to us ALL things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, (2 Peter 1:3). Since nothing was left to be given later to us today, why do people still seek to receive further instruction?
Paul stated that, he (an apostle) was given the mystery of Christ and wrote them down that the Christians in Ephesus should read to understand. Many people do not want to read and study the scriptures, but that has been the admonishment of the Holy Spirit (1 Tim. 4:13; 2 Timothy 2:15). Yes, he apostles and prophets of God wrote the scriptures down as the Holy Spirit inspired them to, and this can make man perfect and thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16). The first century Christians continued STEADFASTLY in the apostles’ doctrine (Acts 2:42). This doctrine is simply the doctrine given to them by Christ (Matt. 28:19-20; 2 John 9). Dear friend, Christ is not revealing any new truth today and we should be careful not to fall prey!
People seek further revelation which God does not authorize from the Bible. Demons take that advantage and supply men with information. This has led to all sort of books claiming inspiration, like the apocrypha books, the book of Mormon, the Qur’an, and the likes. Some even propagate strange doctrines other than what the bible teaches, even to the extent that people teach of the origin of God (Gal 1:6-9). People end up communicating with spirits, that make them feel as if they are talking to God Almighty. Friends, if you desire to hear a voice, you will hear, but know for sure that it is not God’s. Some receive information that even leads them to kill people. And the worst of it all, is the disbelief that is developed in people against God (John 17:20-21). The faith was once for all delivered (Jude 3) and we should not think that God is still bringing out another information. We ought to listen to God by studying the bible.
